If you haven’t filed your NYS Income tax return yet and are expecting a refund, for the first time you have a chance to make a donation from your expected refund to “Meals on Wheels for Seniors.”  A new law enacted in 2019 now adds the NYS Office for Aging Wellness in Nutrition program as an official NYS Voluntary Contribution.  Contributions to this fund will be used to help provide home delivered meals to seniors. The New York State Office for the Aging will oversee the distribution of amounts in the fund.

You can contribute to this fund with personal income tax or corporation tax returns.

  • If you file a personal income tax return, you may make voluntary contributions by completing Form IT-227, New York State Voluntary Contributions, and submitting it with your return. You will find the “Meals on Wheels for Seniors” donation on the form for voluntary contributions, listed as #24 of 25 options for legislatively approved charitable gifts.
  • If you file a general business corporation or New York S corporation franchise tax return, you may make voluntary contributions to certain funds listed below by completing Form CT-227, New York State Voluntary Contributions, and submitting it with your return. You will find the “Meals on Wheels for Seniors” donation on the form for corporate voluntary contributions, listed as the last, or #13 of the options for legislatively approved charitable gifts.

Before making a voluntary contribution, take note of the following: Your contribution(s) will reduce your refund. You cannot change the amount you give after you file your return.
