New York StateWide Senior Action Council (StateWide) with the support of the Health Foundation for Western & Central New York, will be holding an event to discuss Barriers and Solutions to Accessing Healthcare in Central NY. We will begin the day with an interactive panel featuring Peter Newell, Director of the Health Insurance Project of the United Hospital Fund. Mr. Newell is the author of the recently released report Reaching the Five Percent: A Profile of Western and Central New Yorkers Without Health Coverage.

Following the panel presentation, facilitated breakout sessions will take place in each county to identify and discuss localized issues related to the barriers people have experienced in accessing, enrolling, and utilizing health insurance along with possible solutions to these problems for follow up activities at a future date.

We are asking for your support in identifying both individuals and providers from your community who can participate and share their experiences at this event in your respective county. Examples of individuals and groups we are targeting for participation include but are not limited to people who have no health insurance coverage or have had gaps in coverage, people who have experienced barriers or difficulty accessing or enrolling in health insurance plans, people for whom the high cost of health insurance premiums, deductibles, or co-pays have caused them not to seek medical care or treatment.

Ideally, we would strive for a total of 25 people per county representing a diverse segment of the community including both young and older adults, single adults and persons with dependent children, immigrants, persons with disabilities, people with disabilities, anyone experiencing barriers to accessing health care coverage. Each participant will receive a stipend of $25 in appreciation for their time and input.
